The police investigation of Furness General Hospital in Barrow, Cumbria was started following concerns that were raised by a coroner over the deaths of 4 babies and 2 mothers in an 8-month time frame in 2008.
Cumbria Constabulary started their work in June last year looking into the case of 9 day old Joshua Titcombe who bled to death.
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) found significant failings in the hospital trust’s care last year, including the suitability of the maternity facilities and the level to which staff work together.
The trust which runs the hospital has announced the appointment of a new chief executive.
The figures were released under the Freedom of Information Act and revealed the true scale of the problem. 35 families have lodged legal claims in the 5 year period, 32 of which have yet to be settled. The birth injuries involved include 4 stillborn babies and 10 children who have developed cerebral palsy, which is linked to oxygen starvation at birth.
