Dangerous cyclists must face stiff penalties

Road safety campaigners have said that dangerous cyclists that cause injury to pedestrians should face the same penalties as dangerous drivers.

Swain & Co.’s personal injury solicitors back the campaigners for tougher penalties on cyclists after the case of Clive Hyer, the solicitor who was left with brain injuries when a cyclist jumped a red light and collided with him. The cyclist was convicted but was only fined £850.

Cyclists have to follow the law just as much as drivers do. If they seriously injure or kill someone by careless or dangerous riding then they should have to face the same level of penalty.

Cycle road race world champion, Mark Cavendish, said that cyclists who flout the law and jump red lights risk retribution from drivers also. Their actions may provoke drivers who may take it out on cyclists in general.

Cyclists can cause serious injury to pedestrians through their careless riding and the law should recognise the devastating and life changes that these injuries may cause.

If you have been injured in an accident that was not your fault, Swain & Co.’s experienced personal injury lawyers are here to help.
