South London NHS Trust faces administration

In the first case of its kind, it has been revealed that the South London Healthcare NHS trust faces administration due to the £69m debt at the start of this financial year.

South London Healthcare is a merger of three hospital trusts: Princess Royal University Hospital in Orpington, Queens Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup and the Queen Elizabth Hospital in Woolwich. The trust could be dissolved and some services closed, but patients have been reassured that services will run as normal until a decision is made.

Swain & Co.’s specialist medical negligence solicitors say that as well as financially struggling the trust has some of the longest waiting times for operations particularly in accident and emergency (A&E). This is when patients may be experiencing substandard care.

On the positive side they do have low infection and death rates.

We are in favour of NHS trusts being financially stable, but we hope the decision reached does not further affect patient safety.
