At Swain & Co we were incredibly sad to read the story of Maisha Najeeb who was being treated at Great Ormond Street hospital for a rare medical condition when doctors accidently injected her brain with glue. The consequences of this catastrophic failure for Maisha will remain with her for the rest of her life.
The hospital admitted liability after Maisha was left wheel-chair bound for the rest of her life and unable to carry out daily tasks without assistance. The hospital also offered its unreserved apologies.
Maisha was originally receiving treatment because the blood vessels in her brain would sometimes become caught up with each other and bleed. Her medical team would track the flow of blood by giving two injections. The first injection had glue in it which would serve to block the affected vessel, whilst the second would have dye in it and this would show the flow of blood.
However, on this occasion the hospital failed to mark which syringe contained which substance and the glue was injected into Maisha’s artery.
The result of the case is that the NHS will cover the cost of Maisha’s care for the rest of her life, but the brain damage she has suffered can never be reversed.
